In ages past, the kingdom of Aranel was famed for its prosperity and wealth; to any outsider, it seemed a wonderful, peaceful place to live. But in truth, a silent war was being fought among the city’s inhabitants. There were two sides to the battle – the few with magic, and the many without. The people abhorred all magic, in any form, and they considered those burdened with it to be cursed. They called them the Ahiru – the word for unholy in Aranel’s ancient language.
The Ahiru fought hard, but they were badly outnumbered. Soon enough, the king and his followers managed to force the Ahiru to retreat. They were swiftly banished, never to be seen or spoken of again. The Ahiru left, glad to be free of the dangerous city, but they had nowhere to go. The lands surrounding Aranel were seldom spoken of, and never in detail. No one knew what lay outside the kingdom’s protective walls, but the Ahiru soon learned. After a short trek across the fields bordering the city, they found a deep forest, rolling hills, clear lakes, rushing rivers and even a range of dusty grey mountains. Wild fruit grew in the forest, and a variety of animals roamed the area. Cheered by the discovery, they agreed that this would be their new home, naming it Eledil - freedom. They did not remember the tales of bards that claimed a place much like this to be cursed.
Four of the Ahiru elected themselves the leaders, in a sort of council. They did not refer to themselves as kings or queens, as it reminded them of Aranel, and they did not consider Eledil to be a kingdom. Rather, they thought of it as a tribe, or a clan. Heleri and Rapella were the Tosaris, or female leaders; Niden and Ladren were the Tosars. At first, they ruled in harmony, discussing decisions and trusting each other, but it wasn’t long before they began disagreeing. Rapella, the most suspicious, was the first to leave the council, claiming that the others were ruining the clan. She gathered her loyal followers and created a new clan – Sunrose Fire. It wasn’t long before the two Tosars followed suit. Ladren formed Clearstone Spirit; Niden called his clan Moonbeam Shadow. Heleri was left with the rest of the members, the ones who did not care to join the others, and named them Starglow Wave.
They each claimed a section of Eledil, and stayed within their borders, rarely bothering the other clans. After having fought Aranel’s prejudice together, the four Tosarn felt a sort of camaraderie, and could not bring themselves to fight each other. Unfortunately, that unspoken truce ended when Rapella led her strongest warriors to attack Moonbeam Shadow unannounced, in hopes of gaining more land and members. Ladren joined the battle in hopes of keeping Sunrose Fire from taking his own clan. Only Starglow Wave stayed away from the fight, for Heleri would not have her people kill their once fellow clanmates. She formed a scheme in her mind, and without truly thinking it through, she set it in action. She arranged for the other three Tosarn to meet her, alone, where their territories met. They agreed, and the four were together in the small cave that joined their lands. True to their word, they all came alone.
Heleri trusted in their old bond, perhaps a bit too strongly. She thought that if she could remind them of how they had fought Aranel together, that they would end their attacks and live in peace once more. Her attempts failed miserably; Rapella slew her almost as soon as her last words left her mouth. Ladren attacked the Tosari for such a cold-hearted murder - she killed the Clearstone Spirit Tosar easily. She turned on Niden, crazed with bloodlust and her insatiable desire for power. The two battled for long minutes, for they were well-matched in skill and experience. In the end, they thrust for each other’s hearts at the same time. They died locked together, each impaled on the other’s sword.
As it happened, Rapella had not come completely alone, though not on purpose. The Tosari had been followed by a single member of her clan. The woman witnessed the entire scenario, and returned with sad heart to the battlefield. She quickly ended the fights, announcing sorrowfully that all of the Tosarn were dead. She led a small group from each clan to the cave, where they buried their beloved leaders outside the entrance. The cave was dubbed the Amir, a root word with many uses in Aranel’s language. It was the root of the words for death, treachery and new beginnings – in the case of the cave, it represented all three.
The clans were without leaders for a long time, and they quickly became restless and edgy. If new Tosarn did not make their appearances, another war would surely result. It was pure luck that Sariane Kaori came to Eledil – she had wandered far, from distant lands. She took over Starglow Wave, but Clearstone Spirit, Sunrose Fire and Moonbeam Shadow are still without leaders, and they are becoming more unstable by the day. Will you be the one to take control?
